A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in positions right before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Elected officials are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation introduced on Monday would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
