Britain Prepared to Employ Frozen Russian Funds to Fund the Ukrainian Defense

The British government is prepared to move forward with employing the total value of frozen Russian funds to support Ukraine's military campaign, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared.

In a collective announcement, the leaders of the UK, the French Republic, and Germany emphasized that this coordinated action would heighten pressure on Moscow's head Vladimir Putin and persuade the Russian Federation to participate in talks.

They added that the decision would be implemented in close cooperation with the United States.

United Kingdom sanctions have immobilized in excess of £25bn of Russian resources since the Russian government initiated its comprehensive attack against the Ukrainian nation in 2022. However, previously, money provided to the Ukrainian government using Russian assets had only been sourced from profits and interest generated on them.

Sir Keir told President Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany were united in their desire to drive progress toward employing the complete amount of the immobilized Russia's state holdings to conclude the conflict.

He added that additional measures in the coming days and weeks would apply more pressure on the Russian government.

This announcement comes after European Union leaders gathered in Copenhagen recently to debate employing seized Russian assets for a 140-billion-euro credit to the Ukrainian nation.

Recently, President Donald Trump encouraged G7 allies to confiscate or otherwise use immobilized Russian holdings, based on news outlets.

The total of immobilized Russia's holdings in the European Union is estimated to be nearly €211bn.

The Russian government launched large-scale aerial attacks across Ukraine on Friday, resulting in power cuts in many areas of the capital city, the city, and eight other regions.

Several persons were fatally injured and at least 20 people were wounded in the assault, Ukrainian officials reported.

In a message on an online platform subsequent to the strike, Zelensky wrote that the premeditated assault targeted civilian and energy infrastructure.

"What is required is not empty words but decisive action - from the United States, EU, and the G7 - in supplying air defence systems and applying restrictions," he wrote.

"Every sanction decision undermines Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky noted, in a different message.

Additionally that day, Zelensky told reporters he would press Sir Keir to join the Purl program, under which partner nations purchase arms from the United States to donate to Ukraine.

While applauding the UK's firm backing for Ukraine, he remarked it should indicate firmly that it would participate in the program, as well as enforce more restrictions on Russia.
