Wilfried Nancy stated he had no concerns about the sack, claiming, “I believe we are extremely close to changing our fortunes,” in the wake of moving dangerously close to the exit with a comprehensive loss to their arch-rivals.
The home side were ahead Rangers at the interval but a disastrous second period let Rangers to move level on points with the current league title holders. Nancy, who was brought in in December, has now overseen six setbacks in his first eight matches.
“The board and I are united at the club,” stated Nancy.
Pressed on the speculation, Nancy responded: “It’s not on my mind. My focus is on working out methods to aid my players to be good on the fine details.
The fans displayed their anger – directed at the dugout and directors – in their hundreds outside the stadium. Club directors are thought to be considering to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who had a fruitful interim spell last year, if Nancy departs.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. And that’s the situation for the moment. Yet when I say this is the reality, it doesn’t mean that I am pessimistic. Absolutely not. What I mean we are really close, really, really close to turn things around.”
The coach continues to cling to the fact the side can perform strongly for one half at a time. Indeed, if not for missed chances they could have been more than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit aside from the fact that we missed more goals,” he said. “I know that we lost, but I have also to be fair.
“The level we had at times was really, really, really high. That happened. I wouldn't talk like that if it was not the case. But that’s why, in terms of results, I mentioned this is the same story. That’s why I believe a change is coming to things turning around. But for the moment: small things.”
“We produced plenty of positives that we did, like today again. However it’s about consistency. My message would not be the same. Therefore I am a big believer we will manage to get back on track.”
Danny Röhl refused to contemplate a serious challenge even after what seemed like a statement victory. “One match at a time, and we can develop something here,” he said. “The faith in the team is immense.”
