California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of California is facing dryness. This milestone arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified fire dangers and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Indicates An Absence of Drought

A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that all of California is without drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from a period of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here included powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in widespread flooding, power outages, and deaths. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, areas like Modoc County were considered experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the beginning of January finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

However, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean complete water security. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for future water availability. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this hard-won hydrological health for the months to come.
