Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Schools in northern Nigeria have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, an official report indicated.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Area inhabitants informed journalists that the armed men then led a number of girls into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with schools suffering the most of the unrest.
