New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
