Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
