Meteorologists are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," stated the national forecaster.
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are expected to be chilly, so additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
