Liverpool's head coach stated he needed to “examine my own performance” following the Reds suffered a 6th loss in 7 Premier League games at home to Forest and insisted he would find a solution from the title holders' poor run.
Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop before kick off, produced the biggest win at Liverpool's stadium in their history as the Merseyside club fell to an 8th loss in eleven matches in all competitions. The British record signing, Alexander Isak, was once more unnoticeable and the home side contended Murillo’s first goal should have been ruled out for comparable grounds to Virgil van Dijk’s chalked-off goal against Manchester City before the international break. But Slot admitted the responsibility rested with him and made no excuses.
“No one wants to hear me now talking about officiating calls if you lose 3-0 at home to Forest,” said the Liverpool head coach. “I should examine my own role first and my squad, but it does show you how a score can change the momentum of a match. Earlier I was just hoping for us to score a strike. Later we barely created anything.
“Naturally there is a way out, especially with the talented players we have. Regardless if you win or are beaten when you reflect you are always thinking: ‘Where can we do better, in what aspects can we adjust?’ but that is something else from questioning yourself.
“I want to emphasise I am accountable for the current losses. You are answerable when you are victorious but also responsible when you are losing. I can not come up with sufficient reasons for us to have the results we have. That is not good enough and I am responsible for that.”
The team's display unravelled as Slot made multiple offensive substitutions when chasing the match. “It was the same on the road at Forest the previous campaign,” he remarked. “I substituted the French defender out and brought on [Diogo] Jota and he found the net immediately to make it 1-1. Then it was courageous, currently it’s likely stupid.”
The Anfield side last lost back-to-back home league games against Forest in the sixties. The last time they suffered back-to-back league games by a 3-0 margin was in the mid-60s.
Slot commented: “It was extremely poor. Competing on home soil, conceding 3-0 no matter which team you face is a very, very bad outcome. Unexpected if you look at the first half-hour of the game. I did not witness us producing so many chances in the opening 30 minutes perhaps the whole season, and the initial occasion they arrived in our penalty area they found the back of the net.
“It wasn’t against Manchester City, but in every other fixture we have been the dominant team and were capable to generate chances. Lately it is almost constantly that we fail to convert our opportunities and the ones we allow go in.”
