A fundraising initiative is aiming to propel a traditional song from Palestine to the top of the UK charts. The effort hopes to provide aid to Gaza's residents while also spotlighting Palestinian cultural expression.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the song titled Lullaby represents a moment to show solidarity with Palestinians this festive season. He remarked the potential for an surprise number one.
“It would be incredible if that happened, yes,” he said. “I won't be completely let down if it doesn’t, holiday tracks are a thing unto themselves.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the version of a folk song called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the track's resilient spirit.
“The song holds a very special place for many individuals,” Barghouti explained. “The essence is that I would rather die in dignity than exist without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we want to live a dignified life that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The single was laid down in the wake of a solidarity show held in September. Originally intended to be captured during the live event, the performance was cut from the show due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of musicians appearing on Lullaby includes a selection of well-known figures from the industry. All participated in the benefit event, which reportedly raised a considerable total for humanitarian aid.
Lullaby was crafted by a group of talented individuals. The song showcases a mix of the traditional Arabic lyrics with freshly written English words.
The team running the initiative have emphasized that their objective is to collect the highest amount for a charitable pot. These resources will be channeled to Palestinian causes through an non-profit partner.
“We haven't set a rigid aim,” a spokesperson commented. “We’ll go for whatever we can get. Naturally, the higher the total, the greater the impact. It all goes out to Gaza.”
The reality in the area was described as its widespread damage, with a overwhelming percentage of infrastructure reportedly levelled or seriously harmed.
“Against that backdrop, a handful of millions doesn’t make an enormous impact. But I think the significant factor is above all making this cause better known and proving the human dimension of the story.”
The single 'Lullaby' is launching on Friday. Additionally, a video of the solidarity show will be made available for streaming on a major video platform from the 19th of December.
