This Special Release Pokémon Card Aims to Curb the Influence On Resellers

Marking the launch of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. The Pokémon Company and London's Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store featuring special items. Enthusiasts will find products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the museum's theme. The big draw, however, is a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus at the pop-up. This shop is scheduled from on-site at the museum and its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume filled with beautiful illustrations that show creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially is what a Pokémon Professor might publish after adventurers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched had the Galapagos were populated by Pidgeys rather than finches. A key appeal stems from the book's scholarly treatment, treating Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Special Card Stand Out

The company regularly to issue special edition cards celebrating major tournaments or brand collaborations. Many such collector items typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this latest promotion apart however, is the unusually large size. While precise specs were not immediately shared, availability is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with fans limited to only a single card with each transaction.

Limiting Reseller Interest

Per a company announcement, a portion of the merchandise will also be sold outside the museum walls. But, a wider release is slated for select retailers within the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors cannot acquire this promo via the online Pokémon Center. While speculator demand is a given, it appears they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. If you're unable to attend, there is the upcoming fossil-themed display coming to Chicago in the coming months.

"Every penny of sales from the Museum shop and its web shop, which covers these items, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the efforts of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry to discover solutions to the planetary emergency," it says.
