The funding announcement was made amid major cuts in American funding for global aid. Further cuts are also anticipated from other major contributors including the UK and Germany. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the statement together with the United Nations' emergency relief chief.

"These funds will save millions of lives," said the United Nations' relief coordinator. Yet, this sum represents only a fraction of the United States' traditional contributions, which were estimated at approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.

Funding with Specific Conditions

The latest US funding is not without restrictions. The money is focused on only seventeen nations, including Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Significantly, Yemen and Afghanistan have been left off the list.
